The Independent Thieves is a musical group hailing from Corpus Christi, Texas, consisting of guitar-playing singer/songwriters Garrett Wieland and David King.
The musicians met at the weekly Executive Surf Club open-mic in downtown Corpus Christi, and soon began working on tunes together. Both fans of classic rock, folk music, and Americana, the Thieves cite among their influences Van Morrison, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bob Dylan, and The Band.
Having started their musical careers in raucous electric bands (where they could never hear themselves), the focus of this new group is to pare down the instruments and work on the songs, songs that tell stories. No frills, no smoke and mirrors, just good tunes. The songs feature a blend of acoustic guitar, mandolin, piano, the occasional drum, harmonica, and their close vocal harmonies. The two also collaborate with bassist Derek Galvan, drummer Eric Lara, fiddler/singer Owen Fitzsimmons and are currently working on a new album.
